Dry Needling

What is dry needling?

Dry needling effectively alleviates pain by targeting trigger points within muscle tissue. When fine, sterile needles are inserted into these knots or taut bands of muscle, it prompts a release of tension and stimulates blood flow.

This process not only provides immediate relief but also reduces inflammation, promotes relaxation, and enhances the body's natural healing mechanisms.

Within our treatment sessions, we will often include it depending on your preferences, as well as other treatment techniques like massage, joint mobilisations, cupping and plenty more, to help relieve pain.

At Heidelberg Osteopaths we place a strong emphasis on patient-centered care. Before recommending dry needling, we will conduct thorough assessments to understand your unique needs and medical history.

This individualised approach ensures that dry needling is incorporated into a tailored treatment plan designed to achieve the best possible outcomes. Of course, if you don't like needles, we can use other techniques to help.

Dry Needling FAQ

  • Dry needling is a technique that uses fine, sterile needles inserted into tight muscles or “trigger points.” This helps release tension, reduce pain, and restore movement.

  • It’s effective for back and neck pain, headaches, sports injuries, repetitive strain injuries (like tennis elbow or carpal tunnel), and joint pain linked to muscle tension.

  • You may feel a small prick as the needle goes in, and sometimes a quick muscle “twitch” response. This is normal and shows the muscle is releasing. Most people describe the relief afterwards as worth the brief discomfort.

  • Yes - when performed by trained practitioners, dry needling is very safe. The needles are sterile and single-use.

  • Although the same needles are used, the process is slightly different.

Acupuncture is the traditional Chinese Medicine style where needles are placed in specific points along what are considered to be lines of energy (meridians).

Dry Needling is where the needles are inserted into tight muscles and ‘knots’ to release tension and pain.

  • Many patients notice immediate relief, while others may take a few sessions depending on the severity of their condition.

  • No problem! We’ll use other hands-on techniques such as massage or joint mobilisation to achieve similar results.

  • Dry needling is versatile and can be used to address a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. We employ this technique to assist patients dealing with conditions such as:

    1. Back and Neck Pain: Chronic back and neck pain can be particularly challenging to manage. It helps release tension in the muscles surrounding the spine, providing relief and improving mobility.

    2. Sports Injuries: Athletes often benefit from this treatment to accelerate the healing of sports-related injuries, including muscle strains and overuse injuries.

    3. Headaches and Migraines: Tension and trigger points in the neck and shoulder muscles can contribute to headaches and migraines. It can alleviate this muscular tension, reducing the frequency and severity of headaches.

    4. Repetitive Strain Injuries: Individuals with repetitive strain injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow, find relief through this therapy, as it targets the underlying muscular imbalances.

    5. Joint Pain: Dry needling is also effective in relieving joint pain associated with conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
