What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy involves placing special cups on the skin's surface to create a vacuum, drawing underlying tissues upward into the cups.

This vacuum effect lifts the skin and underlying fascia, promoting blood circulation and the release of muscle tension.

Within our treatment sessions, we will often include cupping depending on your preferences, as well as other cupping treatment techniques like massage, joint mobilisations, dry needling and plenty more, to help relieve pain.

In recent years, alternative and holistic therapies have gained prominence as effective means to reduce pain and accelerate injury recovery.

Cupping therapy, an ancient practice with roots in traditional Chinese medicine, has re-emerged as a powerful tool in this regard.

Cupping Therapy FAQ

  • Cupping uses special cups to create gentle suction on the skin. This draws blood flow into tight or painful areas, helping muscles relax and supporting the body’s natural healing process.

  • Cupping therapy is versatile and can be used to address a wide range of conditions, including:

    1. Muscle and Joint Pain: It is particularly effective in reducing pain associated with conditions like fibromyalgia, back pain, and arthritis.

    2. Sports Injuries: Athletes often use this therapy to accelerate the healing of sports-related injuries such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, and overuse injuries.

    3. Headaches and Migraines: Cupping on the neck and upper back can relieve muscle tension that contributes to headaches and migraines.

  • Faster Healing: Cupping therapy accelerates the body's natural healing processes. By improving circulation, it delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to injured tissues, speeding up the repair and regeneration of damaged cells.

Scar Tissue Reduction: Cupping can help minimise the formation of scar tissue following injuries, surgeries, or even overuse injuries. By promoting proper tissue alignment and reducing inflammation, it supports a smoother healing process.

Enhanced Range of Motion: Injuries often result in limited mobility and range of motion. This treatment can aid in restoring proper joint and muscle function, making it a valuable addition to rehabilitation programs.

Complementary to Other Therapies: Cupping therapy can be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan. We combine cupping therapy with other techniques like massage, joint adjustments, dry needling and more, to maximize the benefits of our treatments.

  • Cupping is usually painless, though you may feel a pulling or stretching sensation during treatment. Afterward, it can leave temporary circular marks or mild bruising where the cups were placed — this is normal and fades in a few days.

  • The suction created by the cups increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and helps release tight muscles. This improves healing and promotes relaxation.

  • Many people notice relief immediately or within a few days. Chronic or long-term issues may require a series of treatments for best results.

    1. Improved Blood Circulation: One of the primary mechanisms by which cupping therapy reduces pain is through the promotion of blood circulation. The vacuum created by the cups causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing the flow of oxygenated blood to the affected area. This enhanced circulation helps remove metabolic waste products and toxins, reducing inflammation and pain.

    2. Muscle Relaxation: Cupping therapy effectively relaxes tense muscles and fascia. By lifting and stretching the soft tissues, it encourages the release of muscle knots and trigger points, providing immediate pain relief. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic muscular pain or tension.

    3. Reduction of Inflammation: Inflammation is a common contributor to pain and injury. The therapy can increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage can help reduce inflammation and swelling, offering relief to those dealing with conditions like arthritis or sports injuries.

    4. Stress Reduction: Cupping therapy is not just physical; it also has a profound impact on mental well-being. The relaxation induced by cupping releases endorphins, which alleviate stress and improve mood. Lower stress levels can lead to reduced perceived pain and enhanced healing.

  • We offer cupping therapy within our treatment sessions, which lasts 45 minutes for the first visit and 30 minutes for the follow-ups. The cupping session duration varies according to the patient’s condition and treatment goals. We can work on other areas whilst the cups are on so that you can get the most out of your treatment.
